8 Amazing Artists I’m Into Right now

January 14, 2016 by theblerdgurl 11 Comments

Admittedly, this should be a longer post. In fact, if you visit my Tumblr and click on “Art” you’ll see a BUNCH of folks I’m obsessed with. Some of these folks draw comics, others do not, but I feel all of them are extremely talented and shoudl get more support.

afua richarson_theblerdgurl_lady danger

Afua Richardson

One of the most amazing things about Afua Richardson’s work is how versatile it is. Every single one of her pieces of work has it’s own taste and feel but yet her body of work still maintains a cohesive theme. Afua’s career is just as diverse as a well -sought after comic book artist she’s drawn for Marvel, Top Cow, Dark Horse and many other imprints. Check out Afua’s work here.

keef cross_dayblack_rosarium_theblerdgurl

Keef Cross

Merce,  the century old vampire tatoo artist who lives in a town with no sun is one of my favorite characters. Cross’ work is otherworldly, and each page of his comic is a work of art in my opinion. Buy Day Black here.

mshindo kuumba_theblerdgurl

Mshindo Kuumba

If you’ve followed my twitter, Tumblr or Instagram for any length of time, then you’ve heard me raving about Mshindo’s work. Dedicated to afrofutrism, Kuumba is so talented he can basically paint on anything. I’m not the only one who thinks so either. Apparently, he paid for a car with one of his pieces once. See more of MSHINDO’S Work Here

John Ira Jennings

I can’t keep up with John. Every time I turn around, he’s done another cover, splash page, variant, art piece, curated a collection of art, or is actually teaching. His style is bright and strong and his paintings remind me of collage, every time you look at them you will find something new. Check out John’s Tumblr here.

sheeba maya_theblerdgurl

Sheeba Maya

If I could I would put ALL of Sheeba Maya’s work here. One look at her website and you can see why I think she’s so talented. Again, afrofutrism is primarily her playground, but I love her use of light and shadow and how she draws the female form. Check out Sheeba Maya’s work here.

tony puryear_concrete park_theblerdgurl

Tony Puryear

If you’ve read any parts of Concrete Park then you’ve seen Tony’s work.  His work is what you would get if Gaugin and Jack Kirby did a comic book together. Check out Concrete Park here.

valmar_theblerdgurl_grey williamson

Grey Williamson

Grey’s work elevates the comic medium to high art. The way he inks, shades even the way he displays text is on another level. His full comic book arc Val-Mar is dropping soon and I can’t wait! Check out Grey’s work here.

Marcus Williams

Marcus Williams a.k.a. marcusthevisual has some of the most fun styles I’ve seen in awhile. All of his characters are young, but they all seem to be dealing with adult, larger than life situations. You can see all that in his artwork without a single thought bubble. His upcoming project with partner Greg Burnham, Tuskegee Heirs, is about a younger generation of African-American pilots who fly mechas instead of airplanes and is funding on kickstarter now. Check out more of Marcus’ work here.

Yeah, heard of everyone cept Jennings, Williamson, & Maya. Marcus Williams is one of my faves right now- his style is loose, but on point…and his color choices/technique(I’m struggling with color/theory) are amazing as well.. I still have yet to pick up Concrete Park, but it’s on my “check it out” list(I’m VERY curious about Erika Alexander’s writing).

Thanks for the shout-out and the Concrete Park love, THEBLERDGURL. I love typing your name in all caps like that. The Gauguin/Kirby quote is one we’ll use! We are also in august company, and are humbled.
