The Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture has announced January 12-13, 2018 as the dates of its 6th Annual Black Comic Book Festival. for those of you who are unfamiliar with this event, it’s an annual FREE convention held at the Schomburg Center in Harlem, NY every year. I even did a video series earlier this year about it. Below are the official press release and details. And I am happy to announce that for the first time I will be hosting a panel there!
The Black Comic Book Festival celebrates the rich tradition of Black comix featuring panel discussions, film screenings, a cosplay show and competition, and exhibit tables with premiere Black comic creators from across the country. The annual extravaganza, which drew close to 12,000 attendees in 2017, connects comic readers, creators, bloggers, nerds, independent publishers, and collectors of all ages.
“This year was an exciting one for the Black comix community, and there’s significant anticipation building around cultural moments in comix happening in 2018,” said Kadiatou Tubman, Education Coordinator for the Schomburg Center. “We’re excited to once again kick things off in January by celebrating the richness of Black comix at the Schomburg and by bringing members of this community together again in Harlem.”
The Black Comic Book Festival was co-founded in 2013 by Deirdre Hollman; Jerry Craft, Mama’s Boyz and The Offenders; John Jennings, Black Kirby/UC Riverside; and Jonathan Gayles, University of Georgia.
Admission to the festival is free. Registration will open in mid-December 2017 at www.schomburgcenter.eventbrite.com.
