Magnolia Pictures is bringing a new documentary to the screen on June 21 about legendary fiction writer Toni Morrison. The film, Toni Morrison: The Pieces I Am, directed by Timothy Greenfield-Sanders premiered at the Sundance Film Festival this year. In the documentary, Morrison revisits her books and discusses her life and personal struggles through a series of interviews and cameos with those she influenced the most, including Oprah Winfrey, Angela Davis, Walter Mosley, Sonia Sanchez and more.

Toni Morrison’s work has always chronicled the Black experience with a depth and grace that few other offers have, even when exploring the horrors of our history. Her writing has not only won her a Nobel Prize (the first African-American woman to receive the honor), but entire curriculums have been built around her work. The documentary takes a look at her work as an exploration of race, history, America and the human condition. Toni showed a fearlessness that many of us truly need to see today. Don’t believe me?
