I am a huge Keiron Gillen fan. Not only are he and Jamie McKelvie responsible for giving us one of the most iconic runs on Young Avengers ever. They went on to create one of the decade’s most epic series Wicked+Divine for Image Comics, Gillen also created the tabletop game from hell story DIE and it’s companion RPG. In addition, he’s been working on comics in the Star Wars and Marvel universes well.

But in 2019 he teamed up with artist Dan Mora and came back with another creator-owned project called Once and Future, a modern-day Arthurian adventure complete with knights, swords, stones and even a Questing Beast. On one level, it’s a modern-day adventure horror story told from the perspective of Duncan and his grandmother Bridgette McGuire. A retired British monster-hunter who breaks out of her nursing home in an attempt to prevent the revival of King Arthur. On another level, it’s a story about the dangers of nationalism and xenophobia. (And if Helen Mirren doesn’t play her in the movie whenever it’s adapted, I will fight someone). READ MORE
