Whitney Houston: I Wanna Dance with Somebody is an upcoming biographical musical film based on the life of American pop singer Whitney Houston. The film is directed by Kasi Lemmons, known for her work on “Harriet” and “Eve’s Bayou,” and written by Anthony McCarten, with music executive Clive Davis who also serves as one of the film’s producers.

I was lucky enough to attend a special Pop Up event as press here in New York called I the “I Wanna Dance With Somebody – The Whitney Houston Movie Experience” which featured her music, several outfits from the film as well as recreations of three iconic moments in Houston’s musical career.

Naomi Ackie as Whitney Houston in the new movie Whitney Houston: I Wanna Dance with Somebody

About the film

Naomi Ackie (Star Wars: Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker) stars as Whitney Houston, with Stanley Tucci (Captain America, Julie, Julia) portraying Clive Davis, with Ashton Sanders (Moonlight) playing Bobby Brown, Houston’s husband for fifteen years. Tamara Tunie (See, Harlem), Nafessa Williams (Black Lighting), and Clarke Peters (The Man Who Fell to Earth) are in supporting roles. The film is scheduled to be released in the United States on December 23, 2022, by Sony Pictures.

The biopic was announced in early 2020, with Ackie cast as Houston in December of that year. The rest of the cast signed on in the following year, and filming took place in Massachusetts and New Jersey from August to November 2021.

McCarten, who was nominated for an Oscar for his work on The Theory of Everything and Darkest Hour, wrote the script for Whitney Houston: I Wanna Dance with Somebody on spec and lined up the rights to Houston’s music. TriStar Pictures acquired the film in August 2020, and originally, director Stella Meghie was set to helm the project, but she was eventually replaced by Lemmons in September 2021. Meghie remains on the film as an executive producer.

Whitney Houston: I Wanna Dance with Somebody promises to be a compelling and emotional look at the life of one of the greatest pop singers of all time. With a talented cast and creative team behind it, this film is sure to be a must-see for fans of Houston and her music.
