DC Comics was kind enough to give me an exclusive lettered preview at Issue 2 of Far Sector, the new comic by N.K. Jemisin set in the Green Lantern verse. BEFORE it drops on December 11,. Last month Jemisin debuted the first issue, giving us our first look at Sojourner “Jo” Mullein. The new series on the DC/Young Animal Imprint, drawn by Jamal Campbell (Naomi, The Immortal Nadia Greene), is a different type of Green Lantern. Although Jo sports a Power Ring of her own, she’s not rolling with the Corp. The story is set in a distant city the seize of a planet called “Enduring,” where multiple murders have taken place and law enforcement is at a loss at how to handle them.
In this world, emotions have been suppressed efficiently and globally, virtually wiping out crime altogether. However, a new recreational drug on the market does just the opposite, resulting in a series of violent crimes that no one can explain. Jo is there to investigate as a member of the Lantern Corp but also being a former Black female cop from Earth, which puts her in a unique position. You see, Jo is from the NYPD in 2019 on our Earth, has seen the violence of police brutality first hand and walked away from it. In my interview with N.K. for SyfyWire, she had this to say about her main character.
“Jo is still from Earth in 2019, and she’s bringing that current sensibility into this future place. To a degree, the people in the city “Enduring” kind of regard her as a quaint, retro character. That’s the thing that she has to wrestle with. So it’s not our future. It’s the future of another world, but it’s a future that could become ours if we’re not careful.” says Jemisin.
At the end of Issue 1, Jo thinks she has eyes on the killer. And she’s in hot pursuit, emotions, Power Ring and all. Check out Campbell’s stunning artwork in this exclusive preview. (And tell me you don’t think Jannelle Monae should play Jo in a live-action adaptation!)
