Machinima released the first of 4 episodes of a “motion comic” otherwise known as an animatic for the upcoming Transformer Combiner Wars: Prime Wars Trilogy on June 28th. The series, to be released in full 3D animation in the US on August 2nd on Verizon’s new go90 app, has been described as an “adult version” of the Transformers, clearly catering to fans like myself, who were fans of the original series and the animated movies.

Transformer Combiner Wars takes place in the future after the war between Autobots and Decepticons has ended and all Transformers have returned to Cybertron. Neither Optimus Prime nor Megatron are around anymore and a new hybrid race of machines has emerged. Ones that combine and transform with any Transformers around them. (Gurren Lagann anyone?). Some of what happened to Prime is described in the first person in the following first 3 minute short.

For more information about the upcoming series, check out this great post over at Kotaku that features the new female combiner Transformer. I’ve been watching Machinima fan films for awhile and I hope that they keep their edgy style and that Hasbro let’s them have free reign creatively.
