If you are interested in reading quality books and graphic novelsby Black creators, but are torn between your comic habit and helping a worthy cause, you MUST check out the Humble Bundle Be the Change fundraiser going on right now. This is the last week you can purchase over $1200 worth of graphic novels and prose books by and about Black artists and activists for $20. This particular bundle ends on July 28th so you’d better hurry!
When Gail Simone reached out to me and asked if I would join her, Mikki Kendall (Hood Feminism) and L.L. McKinney (A Blade So Black) in curating some of the content, I was thrilled. I’m really happy that some of my picks make it into the bundle! (And all it took was one tweet!) If you are unfamiliar with Humble Bundle, they started as a PC gaming storefront that existed on a flexible pricing fundraising platform. This year, they’ve expanded and partnered with the Book Industry Charitable Foundation (Binc) and together have raised almost a half a million dollars to support comic book shops and independent booksellers. Their latest campaign, Be the Change features an amazing group of comics and prose work from a diverse mix of incredible creators that feature Black characters or subjects in their work.
The way it works is that customers make purchases of items that have been donated to the platform and portion of that purchase goes to charity. Which charity and how much of their purchase goes to those organizations is left up to the discretion of the purchaser. The Humble Bundle Be the Change bundle features over titles from more than 80 artists and writers available at different tiers and whatever you purchase goes to either The Bail Project, The National Urban League or the Carl Brandon Society. The tiers are $1, $8, $15, $18, or $20 and each level gets you an average of about 12 more books.
I’m not exaggerating when I say there is kick-ass work represented in this project. Including Amazons, Abolitionists, and Activists, A Graphic History of Women’s Fight for their Rights by Mikki Kendall and D’Amico, Archival Quality by Ivy Noelle Weir and Steenz, Livewire by Vita Ayala, Raúl Allén Vindication Vol. 1 by MD Marie, Carlos Miko, Quincredible by Rodney Barnes, Upgrade Soul by Ezra Clayton Daniels, FTL Y’all Edited by C. Spike Trotman & Amanda Lafrenais, Victor Lavalle’s Destroyer, Prince of Cats by Ronald Wimberly, Bitch Planet by Gail Simone and Valentine DeLandro and many many more!
Hurry! Make sure to grab the Be the Change Humble Bundle by July 28th
